Watch this Video

If you watch any online video this week (or month), I highly recommend that it be "Grading People," a video about how dehumanizing it is to grade autistic people (and others) into "high-" and "low-" functioning categories. It's edifying, historically informed, and sadly horrifying. Captions are provided.

Posts about Autreat and other things will (hopefully) be incoming. I'm quite busy and exhausted right now.

Yes, it is dehumanising [to grade people], and Grading People really shows this.

It is one thing to grade meat, diamonds and eggs. The criteria is shown and known.

It's not until 3 minutes that it gets into the concept of grading people.

The social processes and historical factors are duly noted. The Industrial Revolution, first, and then the public education system. The contribution of the eugenicist is recognised.

And then about 6 minutes into Grading People, the people grade themselves.

On Google, the "high-functioning alcoholic" is as often met as a "high-functioning autistic", but I think it's mentioned as just being high.

The European Union has had a lot of silliness where eggs are concerned.

And of course there is now the controversy of "blood diamonds" or "conflict diamonds".

When I see the moving pictures of the people, even when I have not previously met them, I put them into a "familiar" or "friends" category.

As soon Vimeo co-operates with verification processes, I will tell Drew how great his film is. A lot of the effectiveness is in the first 3 minutes. (and probably even in the first one).

The last 2 minutes are good, too. What I especially liked was the mobile phone containing the content.

Messages and messengers!

That was a great video. I also enjoyed "No Pity" and "Treasure Diversity". It was nice of them to hand out free copies.

Is it possible to see a text version of this instead of the video? The video simply will not play on my computer; perhaps my internet connection, although DSL, is still too slow.
If there is a text version or transcript(?) of this video I would greatly appreciate someone putting me in touch with it; my email address is cristy138811@att.net. Thanks, Cristina Lara

My mom even goes so far to say that I should not hang out with aspies if they are not as high functioning as I am, otherwise I am lowering myself to their level. LOWERING myself?? Who is to say they are below me? I cannot believe that even my own mom would make such an ableist remark.

Does anyone know if the Amanda Baggs essay at the beginning of the workshop was made available?
