Follow up on Baron-Cohen

Given my recent criticism of Simon Baron-Cohen's comments on prenatal testing, I thought it only fair to link to an article posted yesterday in which he claims that his views were mis-represented. Despite my disagreements with Baron-Cohen on certain issues, I really appreciated these comments and basically agree with the sentiments behind them. Money quote:

People don’t have to earn their right to life by having the skills to make a contribution. They have a right to life. Period.

Amen.

Good for him!

I do think that, when he talks about "Aspies" and supersystematizers and whatever else, that he is mainly trying to demystify autism.

That's a good thing, when most of the public discourse around autism is that it's some horrible plague that will take your children and turn them into something not quite human. One of the problems is that, in trying to make the point that autistics are people, he focuses too much on the one particular kind of autistic that it is easiest to talk about in terms of being different rather than diseased.

But, yes, even though I also disagree with him on a lot of things, I do appreciate him moving the Overton window on this.

Thanks for highlighting this...

I've shamelessly copied the whole thing to the New Republic...
